(COLUMBIA, MO) - Beginning Monday, Aug. 5, City of Columbia Public Works Street division crews will begin installing speed humps on Hanover Boulevard, Garden Drive and Spencer Avenue. The goal of these installations is to reduce speeds on these three streets, which were identified by traffic studies as having vehicles operating at speeds higher than desirable.

Installation will begin on Hanover Boulevard Aug. 5. Once completed, crews will proceed to Garden Drive and then finish on Spencer Avenue.

The installation of the speed humps is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, weather permitting. If crews are unable to finish due to weather or other factors, they will continue installation work the week of Aug. 12.

Full street closures will not be required, but single lane closures may cause some delays. Drivers are encouraged to find alternative routes when possible. Signs
and flaggers will be on site to assist with navigating active work zones.

The first interested parties meeting to discuss traffic calming measures on Hanover Boulevard was held Oct. 25, 2023, and the second interested parties meeting was held Feb. 27, 2024. A public hearing was held May 6, 2024. The cost of the project is $32,000.

The first interested parties meeting to discuss traffic calming measures on Garden Drive was held April 10, 2023, and the second interested parties meeting was held Aug. 9, 2023. Staff works closely with neighborhood residents to properly identify their concerns, conduct appropriate studies to quantify any problems, and develop strategies to moderate traffic speeds and reduce the number and severity of collisions should they occur. It is the goal of Public Works to find ways to address as many issues as feasible each year.
