(COLUMBIA, MO) - Starting Monday, Aug. 12, City of Columbia Public Works Street division crews will begin installing speed humps on Highridge Drive, Ridgemont and Hulen Drive. The goal of these installations is to reduce speeds on these three streets, which were identified by traffic studies as having vehicles operating at speeds higher than desirable.

Street crews will begin on Highridge Drive Aug. 12. Once completed, they will move to Ridgemont and finish on Hulen Drive.

After completing all three speed hump installations, crews will replace the deteriorated speed humps on Kunlun Drive and Berrywood Drive. The asphalt from these speed humps was removed Aug. 8.

Installation or replacement of all speed humps is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. If crews are unable to finish due to weather or other factors, work will continue the week of Aug. 19.

Full street closures will not be required, but single lane closures may cause some delays. Drivers are encouraged to find alternative routes when possible. Signs and flaggers will be on site to assist with navigating active work zones.

Traffic calming plans showing specific locations of the speed humps are attached to this press release.

Previously, speed humps were installed on Hanover Boulevard, Garden Drive and Spencer Avenue Aug. 5-7. For more on these installations, please see the attached pictures and the Aug. 2 press release at CoMo.gov/CMS/pressreleases/view.php?id=8880.

Public Works provides traffic calming solutions such as speed humps where appropriate in order to influence driver behavior and create more livable neighborhood streets. Staff works closely with neighborhood residents to properly identify their concerns, conduct
appropriate studies to quantify any problems, and develop strategies to moderate traffic speeds and reduce the number and severity of collisions should they occur. It is the goal of Public Works to find ways to address as many issues as feasible each year. More information on Public Works' traffic calming policies can be found at CoMo.gov/public-works/street-division/traffic-management/neighborhood-traffic-management/.
