<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px; margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Historic Preservation Commission to hold a public meeting to discuss Historic Preservation Plan, Sept. 10</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The City of Columbia and its Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) will hold a public meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, to kick off the preparation of a Historic Preservation Plan for the community. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The meeting is open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Friends Room of the Columbia Public Library, 100 W. Broadway. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This project is being funded by a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund. It will enable the engagement of a historic preservation consultant to come to Columbia to assist the community and the HPC in the development of a long-range strategy for historic preservation initiatives in the community.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Following a competitive selection process, Pennsylvania consultant David Taylor was selected to prepare the Historic Preservation Plan. Taylor has been a preservation professional for more than 30 years and has worked throughout the eastern states, New England and the Midwest. He has also assisted communities throughout Missouri with planning for the preservation of historic architecture. Among his Missouri client communities are Joplin, Lee’s Summit, Jefferson City, Cuba, Ferguson, Moberly and now Columbia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Sept. 10 meeting will allow the Commission and community members to offer suggestions for strategies to identify and preserve Columbia’s rich repertoire of historic architecture, including buildings and historic districts. The development of the Historic Preservation Plan will be concluded in the spring 2025, and a second public meeting will be held to present the completed plan to the community.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Columbia presently has a variety of individual buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places, along with several historic districts and one archaeological site. The HPC has also conducted several grant-funded historic resource surveys throughout the community. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Columbia’s Historic Preservation Plan will include a discussion of the history of the community, various historic contexts that represent Columbia’s past, identify property types found throughout Columbia and will include recommended strategies for additional identification and documentation of historic architecture throughout the community.</span></p>
