<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The Sharp End Heritage Committee invites the community to the dedication of three new historical markers along the African American Heritage Trail, an urban walking trail in the heart of Columbia that honors local Black people and institutions from the City’s first 200 years. The dedications will be held Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. and Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. <br /><br />Each dedication will include comments from organizers, public officials and people connected to the individual markers. The dedications will occur as follows:<br /><br />A historic marker honoring the McQuitty home, originally located at 500 N. Garth, will be dedicated Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. at the corner of Garth and Worley. The house was built in the early 1900s by Luther W. McQuitty. His mother was born a slave on the McQuitty farm in about 1850 and he was raised with that family. The McQuitty family lived in the ho
me for decades before it was relocated to Boone Junction at the Boone County History and Culture Center.<br /><br />A dedication of a marker honoring Rufus Logan will follow the McQuitty dedication Sept. 17 at 5:15 p.m. The ceremony will be at 105 E. Ash near the offices of the Heart of Missouri United Way. Logan was the founder and publisher of the "Professional World," the first Black-owned newspaper in Columbia. It appeared for about 20 years, starting in 1901. The newspaper covered career advancements of Black professionals, businesses and events. Logan, known as a scholar, ceased publication of the newspaper to become secretary to what is now named Lincoln University.<br /><br />On Sept. 18 at 5 p.m., a marker honoring John B. Lange Sr. will be dedicated at 1 S. Seventh St. Born in Louisiana, Lange moved to Columbia in 1850 to be with his enslaved wife Louisa and their children when their owner was named president of the University of Missouri. Lange oper
ated a butcher shop in downtown Columbia that was important to both sides in the Civil War. He acquired considerable property and in 1869 moved his business from Flat Branch to Broadway, making it Columbia’s first modern grocery store.<br /><br />"We hope people will attend these events both to help celebrate important Boone County people and institutions and also the community’s remarkable work in making the trail a notable success," said Barbra Horrell, co-chair of the African American Heritage Committee.<br /><br />"Our committee members and partners have worked on this project for a decade and believe we have created one of the most comprehensive African American trails in the Midwest," said Vicki Russell, co-chair of the Sharp End Heritage Committee. "The support for the project is a remarkable credit to the community."<br /><br />The addition of the three new markers completes the trail and brings its total number of markers to
29. The project was spearheaded by the Sharp End Heritage Committee in collaboration with Regional Economic Development Inc. and City of Columbia Parks and Recreation. Local businesses, organizations and individuals provided financial support.<br /><br />Maps of the trail are available at various locations, including the Walton Building at 300 S. Providence, which houses offices of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce.</div>
