<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Reminder: Walking, jogging on railroad tracks is dangerous</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In recent weeks, City of Columbia Utilities and the COLT Railroad have seen an increase in the number of pedestrians walking or jogging along the railroad right of way.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">City of Columbia Utilities would like to remind citizens that the COLT is an active railroad and that walking or jogging along the railroad is dangerous.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We have had a few incidents in the last few months that have brought safety to the forefront of some discussions. Luckily there were no injuries involved," said Shane Riley, Operational Manager for the COLT Railroad. "We would like to ask people to refrain from using the railroad tracks as a shortcut or for recreational purposes. That way, we can all make it home safely at the end of the day."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The COLT is a short line railroad that provides railroad freight service to Columbia and mid-Missouri through a connection with the Norfolk Southern Railway at Centralia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We are a working freight railroad," Riley said. "Our locomotives weigh over 286,000 pounds, and the cars we pull are close to 186,000 pounds each. So it requires some time to come to a stop."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In September 2024, City of Columbia Parks and Recreation presented a report to the City Council outlining plans to construct a trail along the COLT railway from Rogers Street to Brown Station Park. However, construction of that trail is not expected to begin until 2030.</span></p></div>
