<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Fire Department responds to commercial structure fire, Oct. 20</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - On Sunday, Oct. 20, at 8:16 p.m., the Columbia Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire in the 500 block of Nebraska Avenue.<br /><br />The first fire company arrived within five minutes to find a warehouse with heavy smoke and flames showing from the building. Firefighters forced entry into the building and quickly extinguished the fire within 20 minutes. Additionally, firefighters prevented the fire from extending to nearby structures. <br /><br />The structure and contents are valued at $750,000 dollars, and CFD’s efforts limited dollar loss to approximately $200,000. Thirteen Columbia Fire companies, with 23 firefighters, responded to and were required to mitigate this incident. <br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department remained on scene for several hours to assist with the fire investigation and extinguish any hidden fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilian
 s due to this incident.<br /><br />Columbia Fire Marshals have determined this to be an incendiary fire caused by human factors. The Marshals identified this incident was caused by an unhoused individual(s) camping in the area. The fire started outside the building, with no obvious ignition source. The Columbia Police Department was requested to assist in this investigation.<br /><br />The building did not contain working smoke detectors or alarms.<br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling (or on a wall no closer than four inches from the ceiling) on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Replace any smoke alarm over 10 years old.</div>
