(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia's annual dry snow run training exercise is set for Thursday, Nov. 7. During this event, Public Works Street division crews and staff from other departments involved in winter weather response will review safety procedures and rehearse snow routes to prepare for the upcoming winter season.

The exercise will begin as crews depart from the Grissum Building, 1313 Lakeview Ave., between 9:30 and 10 a.m. The Grissum Building functions as the central hub for the City's snow operations.

Throughout the day, residents may observe City snowplow trucks driving their designated routes across Columbia, simulating real-time response efforts.

Here's a refresher on the City's snow response protocol:

Columbia maintains 1,450 lane miles of streets and 1,100 cul-de-sacs. To effectively manage winter weather events, the City prioritizes certain roadways during snow and ice incidents. Priority routes comprise over 691 lane miles, forming a network of major and residential roads across the community.

When snow accumulation is under 4 inches, crews focus on priority routes. If time and conditions allow, they may address other residential streets during regular business hours.

If snowfall exceeds 4 inches, crews operate 24/7, starting with priority routes. They aim to keep streets passable and restore priority routes to near-normal conditions as quickly as possible. Afterward, crews will plow and treat every street to ensure all roads are passable. Note that a street is considered passable if at least one lane is accessible for a front-wheel-drive vehicle traveling safely below the posted speed limit.
