<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Fire Department responds to fire at The Rise Apartments, Feb. 20</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display: inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Thursday, Feb. 20, at approximately 8:55 p.m., Columbia Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm in the 900 block of Locust Street.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first crew arrived in five minutes to find smoke coming from the third floor and upgraded the response to a commercial structure fire. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While occupants were safely evacuating, crews were able to locate the source of the smoke in a trash collection room on the third floor of the building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and limited the damage to the object of origin.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There was no structural damage to the building and there were no injuries.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Columbia Fire Marshals determined this incident accidental. Hot cooking oil was disposed of in the trash, igniting nearby paper items and causing them to smolder. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Seven Columbia Fire units, comprising 23 personnel, responded to this incident.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to properly dispose of oil. Let hot oil cool before handling, store any oil in a clean, sealable container, avoid pouring oil down the drain, and follow any local regulations. When disposing, ensure the oil is away from any flammable materials, as this lowers the risk of fire. </span></p></div>
