<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Fire Department investigates smoke from a commercial structure, April 28</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display: inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Monday, April 28, at 4:59 p.m., Columbia Fire Department units were dispatched to reports of smoke showing from a commercial building in the 6500 block of Brown Station Road. </span></p>
<br />
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first-arriving company, Quint 4, was on the scene within seven minutes and found smoke coming from a large warehouse that produced an irritant. Several individuals on site reported experiencing breathing difficulties due to the smoke, which was determined to contain hydrogen chloride vapor. The vapor was a byproduct of an industrial process at the business, and while sometimes routine, this release was not anticipated.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Due to the potential for hazardous conditions, the department's hazmat team was immediately activated. Hazmat personnel investigated and rendered the situation contained and stabilized it quickly. Crews remained at the scene to monitor the conditions as the irritant burned off, ensuring the safety of the public. There was no threat to the community or the environment during this incident.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A total of 10 Columbia Fire units, comprised of 21 personnel, responded to this incident. Three University of Missouri Health Care EMS units also assisted, but ultimately no individuals required transport to area hospitals. There were no injuries reported.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Today's response underscored why it is critical to have a highly trained hazmat team ready at a moment's notice," Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said. "Even though this incident turned out to be relatively quick to stabilize, the initial uncertainty required specialized expertise to quickly assess the situation and ensure public safety."</span></p></div>
