(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Tuesday, April 29, at 9:33 p.m., Columbia Fire Department units responded to a reported fire in a high-rise building located in the 700 block of North Garth Avenue.

The first fire company, consisting of four crew members, arrived within two minutes to find smoke coming from the third floor of a large residential complex.

Fire crews located the source of the smoke and found a small fire contained to one residential living unit that was being kept in control with the help of a working fire suppression system. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and limited the damage to the area of origin. Simultaneously arriving firefighters successfully pressurized the building while allowing smoke-filled areas to be ventilated. Additionally, firefighters and EMS units evaluated several residents for the impacts of the smoke, however, none were transported to the hospital.

The nature of the fire is accidental and the cause remains undetermined. There were no injuries to firefighters or occupants. Five Columbia Fire units, comprising 17 personnel, responded to this incident.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms provide valuable early warning of smoke and give occupants the critical extra seconds needed to escape a fire. Smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling (or on a wall no closer than four inches from the ceiling) on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Replace any smoke alarm over 10 years old.
