(COLUMBIA, MO) -
On Tuesday, June 17, at 9:43 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to reports of a gas leak in the 1000 block of Jefferson Street.

The first arriving company arrived within seven minutes to find a hit gas line in a residential area, with a confirmed gas leak.

Approximately three city blocks were evacuated in response. Nine residents, as well as two pets, were safely staged nearby with the assistance of a Go COMO bus to provide temporary shelter during the evacuation. There were no injuries reported.

The gas line was crimped and shut off at approximately 10:58 a.m., with Ameren personnel remaining to secure the area and ensure no leaks remained.

Five Columbia Fire units, comprising eight personnel, responded to this incident.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to take immediate precautions in the event of a gas leak. Put out all smoking materials and open flames right away. Do not operate appliances as they could ignite the gas. Leave the area immediately and ensure others evacuate as well. Once safely away, report the leak to your gas provider and call 911. Do not return to the area until it has been inspected and cleared by emergency responders or qualified personnel.
