(COLUMBIA, MO) -
On Friday, June 27, at 4:44 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire in the area of Business Loop 70 East and Grand Avenue.

The first fire company, consisting of three crew members, arrived within four minutes to find a single-story strip mall with smoke showing. Crews quickly began firefighting efforts by deploying hose lines and forcing entry to the affected unit. Once inside, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and heat conditions before finding a fire contained to a storage room near the rear of the structure.

During firefighting operations, crews were able to simultaneously control the fire, search for victims and ventilate the structure by removing a portion of the roof. The fire was contained to the area of origin, and adjacent units experienced minimal smoke and water damage. There were no injuries reported, and no occupants were located in the structure.

Six units, comprising 19 personnel, responded to this incident.

The Columbia Fire Marshal Battalion is currently investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds everyone that smoke alarms, closing bedroom doors and knowing two ways out of every space in your home can save lives. Remember that smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling (or on a wall no closer than four inches from the ceiling) on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button (the first of the month is a good reminder). Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Replace any smoke alarm over 10 years old.
