(COLUMBIA, MO) - Starting Monday, July 7, the City of Columbia Public Works Parking Utility division will begin updating time limits on downtown parking meters to simplify the system and make it easier for visitors to understand parking options.

Out of 1,772 downtown parking spaces, 1,166 will see a change to their time limit. These updates are the result of a 2023 review that recommended reducing the number of time categories to improve clarity and align with best practices used in other cities.

As part of the changes:

All 2-hour meters will be converted to 3-hour meters, with dome colors remaining gray.

The number of green 10-hour meters will be expanded, offering more long-term parking options, especially for participants in the $35-per-month ParkMobile Downtown Parking Permit program.

24-minute, 4-hour and 5-hour meter categories will be phased out.

1-hour meters, previously marked with red domes, will now have yellow domes - a color previously used for 24-minute meters. These will be limited to select areas near government buildings.

Once the changes are complete, downtown Columbia will offer the following number of parking spaces by time limit:

10-hour meters: 616 spaces

3-hour meters: 1,109 spaces

1-hour meters: 29 spaces

15-minute curbside pickup spaces: 18 spaces

Meter updates will be completed manually. Parking Utility crews will reprogram each meter, install new color-coded domes and update time limit stickers where needed. ParkMobile pay-by-app signage will also be adjusted to reflect the changes.

Because Parking Utility crews must reprogram meters and update signage individually, changes will occur gradually throughout the summer. Crews aim to complete the updates by the end of August, though that timeline may shift depending on weather, material deliveries or other operational factors.

Drivers are encouraged to check meter labels and signage carefully before parking, as time limits may differ from what they're used to.

For more information on parking in downtown Columbia, visit CoMo.gov/parking.
