Columbia Fire Department performs technical rescue, Aug. 6

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
This morning, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) successfully performed a complicated technical rescue in the 300 block of Parkwood Court.

At approximately 10:10 a.m., CFD was dispatched to a report of a fall injury. A patient had sustained a mechanical impalement to the leg by a piece of a reinforcing bar, a steel rod commonly used in concrete construction. The first responding fire company arrived within seven minutes, quickly assessing the situation and requesting additional resources.

A CFD ladder truck, now equipped for technical rescue operations, was dispatched to the scene. Crews stabilized the patient and used specialized tools to cut and remove a portion of the metal and railroad ties while keeping the leg in place to prevent further injury.

The patient received care by firefighters and paramedics throughout the trauma, including pain control and hemodynamic stabilization (medical efforts to maintain stable blood pressure, heart rate and circulation to protect vital organ function during serious injury). The patient was then safely transported to a local hospital with the portion of the reinforced bar supported and still intact.

A total of nine firefighters responded to this incident.

This incident marks another successful demonstration of CFD's decision to enhance rescue capabilities across the city. Previously, technical rescues of this nature relied on a single heavy rescue squad vehicle. Today, 3 CFD ladder trucks are outfitted with heavy rescue equipment and rescue specialists, enabling faster, more effective responses citywide.

"This is exactly the type of call we envisioned when we made the strategic decision to distribute heavy rescue capabilities," Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said. "The quick, coordinated response and specialized tools on our ladder truck made a real difference in the outcome for this patient."
