<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px; margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Phase two of roundabout construction at Route K and Old Plank Road starts Sept. 8</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - Beginning Monday, Sept. 8, Sam Gaines Construction, contractor for the City of Columbia Public Works department, will begin phase two of construction on the roundabout at West Route K and West Old Plank Road.<br /><br />Phase one is focused on the north half of the roundabout; phase two will focus on the south half.<br /><br />As part of the second phase, West Route K will be closed just east of the Break Time gas station driveway and east of Vermillion Drive. Access to the gas station will only be available from West Old Plank Road.<br /><br />To bypass the closure, detour signs will direct West Route K traffic from both directions onto West Old Plank Road. <br /><br />Access to Maple Meadows Drive will also be closed throughout this phase.<br /><br />Drivers are reminded to use caution in work zones, follow posted detours and signage, and watch for construction workers and equipment. Slowing
down and staying alert helps protect both the crews on site and fellow drivers.<br /><br />Phase two is expected to be completed in early October, weather permitting. Additional phases will follow, focusing on other aspects of the roundabout. A start date for phase three is expected to be announced in late September.<br /><br />Overall roundabout construction is expected to be completed by early winter, weather permitting.<br /><br />To review, this project is intended to improve safety and traffic flow by realigning the intersection and replacing the skewed angle with a roundabout. The hill on Route K will also be lowered slightly to improve visibility and sidewalks with crosswalks will be added to enhance pedestrian safety.<br /><br />This project is partially funded through the Missouri Department of Transportation Cost Share Partnership Program, which facilitates collaboration between agencies to complete transportation improvements. Old Plank Road is maintained by
the City of Columbia, while Route K is maintained by MoDOT, enabling this joint effort. The total estimated cost of the roundabout is $1,910,000, with funding provided by both the MoDOT Cost Share Program and the City's 2015 quarter-cent Capital Improvement Program (CIP) sales tax extension. <br /><br />An interested parties meeting was held March 16, 2023, followed by a public hearing June 5, 2023.<br /><br />For more information on this and other capital improvement projects, visit CoMo.gov/cip.
