<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Fire Department responds to explosion and residential structure fire, Sept. 19</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display: inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10:31 p.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) units responded to reports of an explosion and residential structure fire in the 4100 block of Grant Lane. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first unit arrived within four minutes and found a one-story home with heavy smoke showing from the outside. Upon investigation, an electric wheelchair's lithium-ion battery had exploded inside the home. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There was significant damage to the wheelchair and immediate area, but thanks to firefighters' efforts, the fire did not extend to the rest of the house. Molten fragments of battery and metal were thrown throughout the space during the explosion and created an extremely dangerous situation for occupants and firefighters.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One person was evaluated at the scene for possible smoke inhalation by paramedics, but ultimately did not require transport to a local hospital.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A total of nine CFD units comprising of 19 personnel responded to this incident to manage it and bring it under control. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">CFD reminds residents that lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in everyday devices such as phones, laptops and power tools, can pose serious fire risks if not handled properly. To stay safe, follow the National Fire Prevention Association's three key tips:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Buy Smart</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by choosing products tested and approved by nationally recognized laboratories</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Charge Safely</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> using only manufacturer-approved cords on hard surfaces and unplug once fully charged</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Dispose Properly</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> at designated facilities rather than in the trash or curbside recycling. </span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Taking these simple steps can greatly reduce the risk of overheating, fires or explosions. </span></p></div>
