<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The City of Columbia will join municipalities and organizations across the country in recognizing National First Responders Day, Tuesday, Oct. 28. City staff wish to honor professionals such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, public works crews, 911 operators and other emergency personnel who protect public safety and keep essential services running. City employees in Police, Fire, Public Works and other departments demonstrate the same spirit of service here in Columbia.<br /><br /><strong>Police Department</strong><br /><br />Columbia Police officers respond to emergencies of every kind, placing themselves in harm’s way to protect lives and property. From traffic crashes and crime scenes to major events and natural disasters, officers serve as a steady presence when the community needs them most.<br /><br /><strong>Fire Department</strong> 
 <br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department responds to a wide range of emergencies, including fires, medical calls, rescues and hazardous material incidents. Firefighters train continuously to ensure rapid, coordinated responses for every situation. <br /><br />"This National First Responders Day, I would like to recognize the brave men and women who serve this community day after day. Whether our crews respond to a medical emergency, a technical rescue, or a fire, our members do everything in their power to keep Columbia and its people safe. I am truly proud of this organization and every one of our members who sacrifice every day to better our community," Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer<br /><br /><strong>Public Works</strong><br /><br />Public Works employees are often among the first on scene when disaster strikes and the last ones to leave. Whether clearing debris after a storm, repairing damaged infrastructure or restoring safe travel during snow and ice events, thei
 r work supports the broader network of first responders and helps ensure the community can recover quickly.<br /><br />"Public Works employees are on the front lines during emergencies," said Shane Creech, Director of Columbia Public Works. "When roads are damaged, trees are down or a winter storm hits, our crews are out there, often in difficult conditions, making sure the community stays connected and safe."<br /><br />Public Works has long been recognized as an essential part of emergency response. In 2003, Presidential Policy Directive 8 formally identified public works professionals as first responders within the National Incident Management System, alongside other emergency services. For more information about National First Responders Day and the role of Public Works in emergency management, visit apwa.org/resources/public-works-first-responders.<br /><br />The City of Columbia honors its first responders for their commitment to protecting public he
