(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia's annual Dry Snow Run training exercise will take place Wednesday, Nov. 5. During the event, Public Works Street division crews and staff from other City departments involved in winter weather response will review safety procedures and rehearse snow routes in preparation for the upcoming winter season.

The exercise will begin as crews depart from the Grissum Building, 1313 Lakeview Ave., between 10 and 10:30 a.m.

Throughout the day, residents may notice City snowplow trucks traveling their designated routes across Columbia, simulating real-time response conditions. The training allows drivers to familiarize themselves with their routes, identify any new traffic patterns or construction areas, and ensure equipment is operating safely before the first snowfall.

The Street Division maintains about 1,465 lane miles of roadway and 1
,100 cul-de-sacs each winter. Priority routes comprise more than 691 lane miles, forming a network of major and residential streets across Columbia.

When snow accumulation is under 4 inches, crews focus on priority routes. If time and conditions allow, they may address neighborhood streets during regular business hours.

When snowfall exceeds 4 inches, crews operate around the clock to clear priority routes and restore near-normal conditions before moving into residential areas. Streets are considered passable when a front-wheel-drive vehicle can safely travel one lane below the posted speed limit.

Public Works will also be adding five new snow-capable trucks to its fleet this winter as part of the City's continued investment in equipment reliability and response efficiency. Two are expected to arrive in November and three in January.

For more information about the City's snow operations and response priorities, visit <a style="whit
