(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia has launched a BeHeardCoMo page to gather public input on a proposed Pedestrian Safety Ordinance. The ordinance was developed following a Street and Intersection Pedestrian Safety Study, which reviewed local crash data, roadway conditions and nationally accepted safety practices.

The proposed ordinance would set limits on when pedestrians may stand or remain on certain medians and would outline expectations for crossing behavior in high-traffic or high-speed roadway environments. It would apply to roadways or intersections that meet at least one of the following conditions on at least one approach:

A speed limit of 35 mph or higher

Traffic volumes greater than 15,000 vehicles per day

Medians less than 6 feet wide

The ordinance and the full pedestrian safety study are posted on the BeHeard page.

The BeHeardCoMo page will remain open for public comment through Jan. 23. Feedback collected will help inform the Columbia City Council before the ordinance returns for consideration Feb. 2, 2026.

Residents can review the materials and submit comments at BeHeard.CoMo.gov/Pedestrian-Safety-Ordinance.
