<p><span style="font-family: Arial;" data-originalfontsize="14px" data-originalcomputedfontsize="14">The Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 300 block of South 9th Street at 3:13 p.m. at Aug. 25.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;" data-originalfontsize="14px" data-originalcomputedfontsize="14">Firefighters arrived to find a fire predominately in a small area underneath cabinetry inside the structure. Crews quickly evacuated the building and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the building.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;" data-originalfontsize="14px" data-originalcomputedfontsize="14">Approximately 25 Columbia Fire Department personnel responded to the incident. Firefighters conducted overhaul and ventilation operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and that there was no additional fire extension. There were no significant fire-related injuries reported.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;" data-originalfontsize="14px" data-originalcomputedfontsize="14">The cause of the fire was electrical relating to an on<span data-removefontsize="true" data-originalcomputedfontsize="14">-demand water heater power cable had been bent by other kitchen appliances, causing heat to build, and igniting the cable. Fire melted the power cable for the water heater, and refrigerator. The nature is classified as accidental.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;" data-originalfontsize="14px" data-originalcomputedfontsize="14">The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that even small fires can quickly spread. Residents should ensure smoke alarms are properly installed and functioning and should call 911 immediately if they discover a fire.</span></p>
