(COLUMBIA, MO) - At approximately 5:46 p.m. on Aug. 31, the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to the 1000 block of Tiger Avenue for a report of a smoke alarm in a University of Missouri Residence Hall.

The first-arriving fire company found smoke on the top floor of the residence hall and upgraded the incident to a commercial fire. Additional CFD companies responded and worked to locate the source of the smoke, conduct searches of all five floors of the building and establish the necessary resources to safely extinguish the fire. The University of Missouri Police Department entered into unified command with CFD chiefs and managed the incident together to ensure the students were safe, and that the incident was mitigated quickly.

Firefighters located the fire in a non-resident room and worked to contain it to the area of origin. The incident was marked under control by 6:33 p.m. Firefighters remai
ned on scene to ventilate the building and ensure the fire was fully extinguished. Property damage was limited to an operating electrical device in a non-residence room on the fifth floor. The building was deemed safe, and students were allowed to reoccupy the areas not involved in the incident. The facility’s safety and egress plan was followed, and the building was evacuated quickly. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, and the cause of the fire will be determined by University of Missouri officials.

A total of 11 companies and 27 personnel responded to the incident.
