(COLUMBIA, MO) - Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, Don Schnieders Excavating Company Inc., a contractor for the City of Columbia Public Works department, will begin construction of a roundabout at South Fairview Road and Chapel Hill Road.

The project is intended to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection. It also includes stormwater improvements and sidewalk construction along the north side of Chapel Hill Road east of Fairview Road to improve pedestrian safety.

The first phase of the project, which starts Sept. 8, will require lane restrictions on Chapel Hill Road and lane closures on Handley Place. Subsequent phases will have the following impacts on local traffic, with start dates to be determined:

Phase 2 will require lane restrictions on South Fairview Road and Chapel Hill Road.

Phases 3-5 will require the closure of South Fairview Road north of Chapel Hill Road.

The City will provide additional updates on those phases as the project progresses.

Chapel Hill Road will remain open to traffic throughout construction, although lane restrictions and temporary closures will occur. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.

The estimated cost of the roundabout is $1.5 million, with funding provided by the City's 2015 quarter-cent Capital Improvement Program sales tax extension.

An interested parties meeting was held Dec. 14, 2023, followed by a public hearing March 18, 2024.

For more information on this and other capital improvement projects, visit CoMo.gov/cip. The capital improvement projects search feature includes records associated with capital projects and allows users to search by keyword, project status, department, ballot issue or construction year. The information is also available in map
form through the capital improvement dashboard.

Drivers are reminded to use caution in work zones, follow posted detours and signage, and watch for construction workers and equipment. Slowing down and staying alert helps protect both construction crews and fellow drivers.

The project is expected to be completed in winter 2027, weather permitting.
