<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Fire Department responds to residential structure fire, Oct. 4</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Sunday, Oct. 4 at 8:33 p.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1500 block of Vandiver Drive.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">CFD arrived within three minutes and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a residential trailer home. Firefighters immediately conducted an interior fire attack while simultaneously searching for occupants. During the search, a smoke explosion occurred, as shown in the attached photo. A smoke explosion is when unburned fuel particles and gases (smoke) mix with air and meet an ignition source. Smoke explosions are often controlled with ventilation and flow-path management in residential occupancies; however, when the structure is compartmentalized, it can be more difficult to control. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After the smoke explosion, firefighters resumed the fire attack and successfully controlled the incident. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A total of five fire companies, two chief officers, one safety captain and one fire marshal with 21 personnel responded to the incident.<br /></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br /></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Columbia Fire Marshal's Battalion and the Columbia Police Department are investigating the origin and cause of the fire. </span></p></div>
