(COLUMBIA, MO) -
On Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 2:08 p.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were dispatched to a commercial structure fire in the 600 block of West Business Loop 70.

CFD arrived within three minutes to find light smoke coming from a single unit in a strip mall. Firefighters immediately entered the structure to search for potential occupants and conduct a fire attack. Firefighters limited the damage to the kitchen area, and the incident was under control within approximately five minutes of arriving.

There were no reported injuries, and firefighters were able to search the large building and its adjacent occupancies within 15 minutes. An extended time was needed to remove smoke from the occupancies and assist the business owners in returning to normal operations.

A total of seven fire companies, two chief officers, one safety captain and one fire marshal with 28 personnel mitigated this incident.

The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion has conducted an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire and has determined it to be an accidental cooking fire.
