The submarine has a crew of approximately 140 sailors.

The Namesake City relationship began in 1994, when then-Mayor Mary Anne McCollum was honored to have Columbia selected as one of three cities to serve as namesakes for the submarine. The other Namesake Cities are Columbia, Illinois, and Columbia, South Carolina. The USS Columbia was commissioned on Oct. 9, 1995.

The Namesake City relationship is coordinated locally by the Mayor’s Task Force on the USS Columbia and Friends of the US
S Columbia Submarine SSN-771, chaired by Anne Moore. The task force receives no City funding and relies on the generous support of community partners, businesses and organizations that help make events and activities celebrating the USS Columbia and its connection to Columbia possible.
