(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The Boone County Overdose Response Coalition will celebrate its 5th anniversary Oct. 15. The event will be held at Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services, 1005 W. Worley St., from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

At the celebration, members will review their accomplishments from the past year and sing "Happy Birthday." A group photo will be taken at 2:10 p.m. so coalition partners can mark the occasion.

Former Police Chief Geoff Jones began what would become the coalition in October 2021. Jones called a town hall meeting to alert the local community to the dramatic rise in drug overdose deaths, educate citizens on how to recognize signs of an overdose and demonstrate how to use naloxone (Narcan), a nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose and save lives. Attendees of that initial meeting received a personal supply of naloxone nasal spray.

By the end of this month, the coalition will have offered community partners 48 consecutive monthly Save a Life events to educate local communities and distribute naloxone. These events also serve to connect the community with additional resources from partner organizations. The coalition continues to build new connections, maintaining over 130 contacts with organizations, agencies and individuals in Boone County.
