Office of Cultural Affairs Updates

Annual Arts Organization Funding.....In October, City Council will
authorize contracts with the local arts organizations that will receive
funding through the OCA’s annual process. The contracts will then have
to be processed by the City Clerk and the City Manager and City Attorney
will have to sign them. Contracts will be sent out immediately after
that. Organizations will need to return signed contracts and any other
supporting materials that are requested before payments can be made.

Creative Kids Family Fun Fest.....Don’t miss this first ever event on
Wednesday, September 16, 6 -8 p.m. in Flat Branch Park (Fourth and
Cherry and Locust Streets). The event will feature participatory art
activities and kid-friendly performances of music, theatre and dance,
all free. Local arts groups participating include Access Arts - School
of Service, the Columbia Art League, Missouri Contemporary Ballet, PACE
(Performing Arts in Children’s Education) and TRYPS (Theater Reaching
Young People and Schools). The event is a collaboration of the city’s
OCA and Parks and Recreation Department with financial assistance
provided by the Missouri Arts Council. For more information, email

Commemorative Poster Unveiled…..Congratulations go to Naomi Sugino
whose oil on canvas painting titled After the Rain has been unveiled as
the 2009 Columbia Commemorative Poster. The work was selected from 74
images submitted by 13 Missouri artists through a jury process. After
the Rain depicts an alley on Ninth Street between Broadway and Cherry
Street in Columbia. Born in Ishioka, Japan, Sugino came to the United
States in 1986 for school. Sugino is currently on faculty at the
Columbia College Art Department. The 2009 Columbia Commemorative Poster,
After the Rain, can be purchased at Deck the Walls in the Columbia Mall
and at 1305 Grindstone Parkway, or at the city’s OCA, 1 S. 7th
Street.

Free Arts Education Workshop…..Teachers and artists are invited to
learn about how to develop arts-integrated lessons and study guides at a
free workshop offered by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education,
Friday, October 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the ARC, 1701 W. Ash. More
