Wastewater treatment plant named 'Plant of the Year'
									
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia's wastewater treatment
plant received the large facility "Plant Of The Year" award at the
75th annual meeting of the Missouri Water Environment Association (MWEA)
March 21-23 at Tan-Tar-A resort at the Lake of the Ozarks. The award is
given in recognition of outstanding performance in the treatment of
wastewater. 
	"The city is pleased to receive the MWEA 'Plant of the
Year' award. It recognizes the hard work and dedication put forth
by a qualified staff to make our wastewater treatment plant run
efficiently, " said City Manager Raymond A. Beck. 
	Our regional plant was dedicated in 1978 with innovative
features, such as generating electricity by using gas generated at the
plant and recycling treated effluent for irrigating. Plant effluent is
further treated through a wetland system.
	Beck and Sewer Utility Manager Terry Hennkens both received
awards at the luncheon. This honor recognizes significant contributions
and efforts toward activities related to design, management,
construction, operations and maintenance of collection systems. 
	Beck was also recognized as a former president of the
organization, having served in that capacity from 1987-1988. During his
term as president, a committee was formed to emphasize the importance of
a wastewater collection system and a committee was also formed to study
wetlands.
