Tree planting scheduled

COLUMBIA, MO (November 3, 2004) -- As part of the TRIM Cost Share
Program, Columbia Parks & Recreation and TreeKeepers* volunteers will
plant trees at Stephens Lake Park on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8 a.m.

The Columbia Parks & Recreation Department was selected to receive
funding from the Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (TRIM)
Program. The TRIM Program is a competitive cost-share program provided
and administered by the Missouri Department of Conservation in
cooperation with the Missouri Community Forestry Council. The purpose of
the program is to provide financial assistance for the management,
improvement or conservation of the urban and community forest.

"The Nov. 13 tree planting is part of Parks & Recreation's
sustainable management plan for the bottomland woods along side the
Hinkson Creek at Stephens Lake Park," explains Brett O'Brien,
natural resources supervisor, Columbia Parks & Recreation.
"Specifically we are interested in replanting 82 trees in the
south-east corner of the park." Fifty-five trees will be planted on
Nov. 13. The remaining trees will be planted in December."

For more information, call Parks and Recreation at 874-7201.

*TreeKeepers volunteers complete a six-week, one night per week,
training class to teach proper care and maintenance of trees. TreeKeeper
graduates agree to donate at least 36 volunteer hours for city of
Columbia tree care projects.
