Walking School Buses ready to go
									
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - Watch out for groups of elementary school
students in bright yellow t-shirts in the next few weeks: they will be
participating in a pilot Walking School Bus program.
	Between April 18 and May 13, a group of 5-10 families each at
Grant, Russell, Ridgeway and Fairview Elementary Schools will walk every
day as a Walking School Bus group. Parents will take turns in leading
the "buses" to and from school.  
	Walking to school is an easy way for children (and adults) to
get the 30-60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by the
Centers for Disease Control to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the
risk of chronic disease. Other benefits include reduced traffic
congestion and air pollution around schools, increased community
connections, and children better able to focus in class.  
	This pilot program is organized by the PedNet Coalition, and its
partners, as part of the Active Living by Design grant project. A
permanent Walking School Bus program is planned for certain elementary
schools in August.
