COLUMBIA, MO (August 4, 2005) - Federal and local officials attend
Transportation Summit - Ray Beck, City Manager; U.S. Representative
Kenny Hulshof, 9th Congressional District; U.S. Senator Christopher
"Kit" Bond, Presiding Commissioner Keith Schnarre, Boone County;
Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman; and U.S. Senator Jim Talent share a
lighter moment following a Transportation Summit at MFA, Inc., in
Columbia on August 3. During the summit, Bond discussed the $25 million
grant Columbia will receive for a Nonmotorized Pilot Program. Columbia
was one of four communities nationwide to receive the grant that calls
for the development of an interconnected pedestrian and bicycle system
between schools, businesses, neighborhoods, transportation facilities
and recreational areas. The interconnected system will give citizens
another transportation option that will be both healthy and conserve
petroleum resources at the same time. Talent discussed funding he
secured for two projects, totaling $8 million - the Gans/U.S. 63
connector and the Scott Boulevard project. Hulshof provided more
information about the $2 million he secured for a corridor study for the
extension of Stadium from I-70 to U.S. 63 on Columbia's east side.
