Utilities challenge students to conserve
energy

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Encouraging young people to be energy conservation
agents is the goal of the Energy Challenge program, sponsored by
Columbia Water and Light and Boone Electric Cooperative. Staff will
visit Columbia junior high science classes during February to
demonstrate principals of electricity and the important role of
conservation. To get the students involved with conserving electricity
at home, the program includes experiments with a working model furnace,
a take-home energy audit and an energy game show.
During the first class visit, Boone Electric and Columbia Water
and Light
employees discuss the various uses of energy in a home. A working
model of a furnace allows students to measure air flow and determine the
effect of dirty air filters and blocked return registers. At the end of
the first session students are assigned a home energy audit. Students
supply answers about their family's energy use and the information is
entered into a computer program. The students then get a report of their
home's energy use and recommendations on how the family can conserve.
During the second session of the Energy Challenge, students
discuss their energy audit reports with the utility staff members.
Students then participate in an energy game show that reinforces the
energy concepts they have learned. Students are given an allowance when
the game starts and then required to pay their utility bill, which is
dependant on their answers of practical home energy situations.
For 10 years, the Energy Challenge program has provided students
at Oakland, West and Jefferson Junior High School with practical
concepts of energy that they can apply to their home energy use
throughout their lives. Staff from Columbia Water and Light and Boone
Electric will be at Oakland Junior High on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15, West
Junior High School on Feb. 2 and Feb. 16 and at Jefferson Junior High
School on Feb. 7 and Feb. 22.
For more information on the schedule or to contact staff who are
teaching the Energy Challenge program, please contact Columbia Water and
Light and/or Boone Electric.
