Innovative cooling system project sponsored by Columbia Water and
Light

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Water and Light is sponsoring the
development of a more efficient cooling system by awarding a local
mechanical engineering student $4,000. Joshua Hensley, a University of
Missouri student who is working on his graduate degree, is refining
plans for a direct contact heat exchanger for residential use. This
heating and cooling system is estimated to be 30 percent more efficient
than traditional coil exchanger systems used in homes today.
Hensley received money for this project through the American
Public Power Association's Demonstration of Energy Efficiency
Development (DEED) program. As a utility partner of DEED, Columbia Water
and Light sponsors research that develops new practices or technology
that improve energy efficiency.
As a senior project, Hensley studied the feasibility of using
direct contact heat exchangers and found that showed great development
potential on a smaller scale for homes. This method of cooling is more
efficient because it uses water to cool the air verses using the
traditional Freon-cooled coils. During this phase of the project,
Hensley is investigating and developing the system operation in order to
design a unit that will effectively spray water to cool the air and be
of the same size as traditional units that people have in their homes
today.
As a municipally owned utility, Columbia Water and Light strives
to help customers save money and resources. The utility has been a
member of the DEED program for 20 years, was the winner of the 1985
American Public Power Association's Energy Innovator award, and will
be presented with the Continued Excellence Award in April.
