Variety of summer camps still open

COLUMBIA, MO (May 24, 2005) --It is not too late for youth to register
for one of many camps going on this summer, sponsored by Columbia's
Parks and Recreation Department. Following is a description of each: 

Camp Adventure is a day camp featuring outdoor activities for children,
such as canoeing, archery, swimming, arts & crafts, hiking, fishing and
conservation. Enrollment is open to children who will start first grade
this fall up through children who have completed seventh grade. Two-week
sessions will be held at Nifong Park at these intervals: June 13-24,
June 27-July 8 (skipping July 4), July 18-29 and Aug. 1-12. The cost is
$190 per session. A one-week session, Escapade Week, will be held July
11-15 at the Activity and Recreation Center (ARC) for $97.50.
Registration for Camp Adventure must be made in person at the ARC.

Active Kids Club is a half-day camp for children entering third, fourth
or fifth grades in the fall. Children will participate in organized
sport activities such as soccer, basketball, kickball and swimming.
Active Kids Club meets from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Mondays through
Thursdays at these parks: June 6-9 at Shepard, June 13-16 at Oakland,
June 20-23 at Fairview, June 27-30 at Cosmo-Bethel, July 11-14 at
Oakland, July 18-21 at Fairview and Aug. 8-11 at Cosmo-Bethel. Cost is
$25 per week. 

North Shore Basketball Camp is a nationally-recognized organization
providing instruction in basketball fundamentals. The camp will feature
former NBA player Everette Stephens. It will be held June 6-10. Children
between 7 and 10 will attend the first session from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
those days. Children between 11 and 14 will attend between 1:30 to 5
p.m. The camp will be held at the ARC Gymnasium. Cost is $210. 

Sunset Camp is an evening camp program which operates in three
neighborhood parks: Worley, Grand Avenue and Indian Hills. It is
scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from June 20 through
Aug. 12. The camp is for children between 6 and 12. Arts and crafts,
game and athletic activities will be offered at a cost of $15 per
participant for the whole camp. 

S.T.A.R.S. (Seeking Traditions, Art and Rights of Passage) is an
eight-week program based on teaching the seven principles of Kwanza. It
will be held at the Armory Sports Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
weekdays between June 27 and Aug.19. The cost is $35 for the first child
in a family, then $20 each additional child. 

Summer Dance Camp offers the opportunity for kids between 6 and 10 to
learn routines and fundamentals in either jazz or tap, and ballet or
cheerleading (choice of two). Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon from
Aug. 8-12 at the ARC.
