Eleventh annual 'Use Less Stuff*' holiday campaign - Nov. 17 to Jan. 1
(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Nov. 17, the Columbia Public Works Volunteer Program will celebrate the eleventh annual Use Less Stuff Holiday Campaign. Each year, Americans throw away 25 percent more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday period than any other time of year, and this extra trash goes directly to the city's landfill.
Reducing waste can be financially rewarding. If you use less stuff, you'll save money every time you shop. Reducing waste helps your environment and community since the cost of preventing waste is zero, unlike recycling and landfilling, which can be expensive. Here are a few easy "reducing" tips that will save you money and help your community:
* "Home Sweet Home" - There's no place like home, especially during the holidays. So why spend so much time, energy and money traveling when everything you need is right at home? Pretend you're a tourist to Columbia. Call the AAA, visit the -
Chamber of Commerce, find holiday events on the city's Web site and enjoy the local holiday attractions and events close to home. You'll be saving money on gasoline consumption while helping to keep your local economy strong.
* Lights - Camera! Use outdoor lights that are wired in parallel. If one bulb quits working, the rest will keep shining. Use your own camera to capture holiday memories instead of disposable cameras. Purchase rolls of 36 instead of 12 exposures.
* BYOB - Giving Gifts! Plan your shopping in advance to avoid last minute frenzies. "Bring your own shopping bags" (paper, plastic or cloth), or consolidate your purchases into one shopping bag. Consider what friends and family really want or need - try giving gift certificates. Give gifts that encourage reusing, such as a book for making crafts from reusable items or a cookbook for leftovers. The Sunday comics are a great gift wrap idea! Buy rechargeable batteries for toys and electronics.
Find additional tips for using less stuff and other information regarding waste reduction on the city's Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com (GoUseLessStuff). Mark your calendar for "Use Less Stuff Day" on Thursday, Nov. 17, as a reminder to your family to conserve.
