Planning begins for Flat Branch Park Phase II Project
COLUMBIA, MO (October 27, 2005) -- The Columbia Parks and Recreation
Department is preparing to begin the first stage of the development of
Flat Branch Park - Phase II. The first stage is a cleanup process that
will allow the redevelopment of the site as a park area.
The cleanup stage will consist of the implementation of an EPA
Brownfield Cleanup Grant that will allow for the removal of petroleum
contamination from the site.
Specifically, all contamination will be removed and clean fill will be
added to achieve the proper sub-grade needed for the eventual park
construction. The city plans to work with the Missouri Department of
Natural Resources Voluntary Clean-up Program (VCP) to provide project
oversight during the contamination removal process.
The city has also contracted with an environmental consulting firm to
oversee the actual cleanup activities and provide the necessary testing
to determine contamination location. The work plan for the project and
all administrative documents and records will be available to the public
upon request.
Public inquiries regarding the methods of cleanup at the site and the
project itself are encouraged. To make an inquiry or for more
information, please contact Columbia Parks and Recreation at 874-7201.
