City's commemorative poster wins national recognition
COLUMBIA, MO (April 27, 2006) -- The city's 2005 Commemorative
Poster, produced by the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) for last
year's Columbia Festival of the Arts, has received an award from
Sunshine Artist, a nationally distributed magazine that serves as a
guide to festivals and events.
Every year, Sunshine Artist singles out festivals that develop original
art posters. Overall design, artwork and typography are considered in
the judging process. Winning entries, including the city's, which is
recognized as the entry with the "best use of color," are published
in the May 2006 issue of Sunshine Artist.
The city's poster features a close-up photograph of a single leaf by
local artist Scott Myers, and is titled Sycamore. Myers took the photo
while walking his dog at Three Creeks Recreation Area just outside of
Columbia. In his statement about the work, Myers says that "Sycamore
demonstrates what can happen when all the elements flow together and the
process of making art is effortless."
Visual art is featured on the city's Commemorative Poster each year
and serves as the central visual image of the Festival of the Arts. The
Sycamore poster, and others from 1993 to 2004, can be purchased at Deck
the Walls in the Columbia Mall, or at the OCA, 13 N. 8th Street. The
2000, 2003 and 2004 Commemorative Posters have previously received
awards from Sunshine Artist magazine.
The entry deadline for the 2006 Poster has passed, however Missouri
artists wishing to participate in the 2007 competition should contact
the OCA to be placed on the Poster's mailing list: 573-874-6386,
festival at GoColumbiaMo.com or www.GoColumbiaMo.com (Go Word search:
GoArtsFestival).
The Columbia Festival of the Arts and the Commemorative Poster are
programs of the city's Office of Cultural Affairs. Financial
assistance for both projects has been provided by the Missouri Arts
Council, a state agency. The 2005 Commemorative Poster was sponsored by
Deck the Walls and the Columbia Daily Tribune.
