Columbia firefighters respond to fire at local motel
COLUMBIA, MO (April 28, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at 11:11 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, at 2500 I-70 Drive Southwest, Room 102. Initial reports indicated that a fire was in progress in that room involving the ceiling in the bathroom area.
Firefighters arrived to find light smoke in room 102 and it appeared that the fire had been extinguished. Further investigation confirmed that two unknown guests, identified only as comedians who had performed earlier at the local nightspot Déjà vu, had left when fire investigators arrived on the scene.
Fire investigators determined that the fire began due to a malfunction in the ventilation fan in the bathroom of room 102. Damage was limited to minor fire damage in the ceiling of the restroom and light smoke damage to the room. Dollar estimates of damage are less then $2,000.
The motel remains open for regular business.
