Columbia firefighters respond to medical emergency involving
intentional burn injury
COLUMBIA, MO (April 28, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a
report of a person on fire at the intersection of Providence and Locust
streets at 7:21 a.m. this morning. Firefighters arrived to find a male
subject lying on the ground near the Phillips 66 station entrance
suffering from burn injuries to his arms and right leg.
Further investigation by the Columbia Fire Department and Columbia
Police Department determined that the man had entered the Phillips 66
station, asked to borrow a gas can, bought some gasoline, a pack of
cigarettes and a disposable butane lighter. He then went onto the
parking lot, doused himself with gasoline and lit his gas-soaked
clothing on fire with the lighter.
Witnesses tell investigators that the man then took several steps and
then stopped, dropped and rolled. When firefighters arrived, the fire
was out.
The man suffered moderate burn injuries to both arms and his right leg.
Paramedics from Boone Hospital and firefighters treated the man on the
scene and then transported him to the University Hospitals George Peak
Burn Center. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
The policy with intentional injuries consistent with doing harm to
oneself is to not release the name of the victim.
