City will hold bow hunter orientation, registration sessions

COLUMBIA, MO (August 10, 2006) -- The city of Columbia will conduct three hunter orientation/registration sessions for citizens interested in bow hunting for deer on designated city properties. The sessions are open to the public at no charge.

The one-hour sessions will be held at the Activity and Recreation Center, 1701 West Ash Street, on the dates shown below.

* Saturday, August 26, at 8:30 a.m.
* Tuesday, August 29, at 3:00 p.m.
* Tuesday, August 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Last year, the city offered bow hunting opportunities at the Sanitary Landfill, Grindstone Nature Area, a portion of Twin Lakes Recreation Area, Smith Park on the southwest corner of Waco Road and Brown Station Road and at sewer utility property at three locations: Strawn Road, Coats Lane and Bainbridge Drive. This year the City Council is considering changes that will be announced before the orientation/registration sessions take place.

To hunt at the approved locations, hunters must attend one of the three sessions. City permits, which must be carried while hunting on city property and displayed in vehicles in designated parking areas, will be issued only at these meetings. Hunters shall also follow all relevant Missouri Department of Conservation rules, regulations and requirements related to hunting.

Now in its third year, this program continues to attract a growing number of hunters. More than 240 potential hunters attended the sessions in 2005, compared to 170 who attended in 2004.
