A ‘Taste of School’ at West Boulevard Elementary School

(COLUMBIA, MO) - In addition to regular “back to school”
activities-filling out forms and meeting the teachers-parents and
children attending West Boulevard Elementary School’s Back to School
event on Monday, Aug. 21, from 4-6 p.m. can get a sneak peek at their
newly-decorated cafeteria.
The cafeteria redecoration project is a component of the Healthy
Eating by Design (HEbD) grant awarded to the PedNet Coalition, in
collaboration with the Columbia/Boone County Health Department.
Mr. Ned Vail, former Columbia resident and independent freelance
artist, was hired to create one of his unique murals for the project.
The mural he has created will be hung throughout the cafeteria and
feature the story of how fruits and vegetables make it to our
tables-from seeds to the market place. Other murals created by Mr. Vail
in the Columbia community are located at the University Children’s
Hospital, the west outside wall of Shakespeare’s Pizza downtown, and
Countryside Nursery School. Mr. Vail was also instrumental in
establishing the CARE Gallery, an offshoot of the city’s CARE (Career
Awareness and Related Experience) Program.
The goal of the HEbD project is to increase awareness of good
nutrition to young children and their parents through exposure to
different fruits and vegetables, education and media literacy. The HEbD
grant is a “sister” of the Active Living by Design grant funded
through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. For more information on the
HEbD project, go to www.activelivingbydesign.org, a link to HEbD can be
found on the left side.
