Unattended candle causes $125,000 damage to home located in central Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (December 20, 2006) -- On Dec. 19 at 9:43 p.m. units of the Columbia Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 410 S Williams St. The first arriving company discovered a fire in the living room area of the home. The occupants were away from the home at the time of the fire, but arrived a few minutes after the fire companies were on the scene.
The fire was quickly brought under control, however it had been burning for a lengthy period prior to its discovery by Columbia Police Officer Steve Wilmoth. Wilmoth was patrolling the area when he saw the flames and smoke coming from the home. Three fire engines, a rescue squad, a ladder truck and three staff vehicles responded to the scene totaling 19 personnel.
Fire Investigator Lt. Ron Fisher determined the cause to be an unattended candle. Damage to the structure including contents is estimated at approximately $125,000.
With the holidays rapidly approaching, the use of candles increases this time of the year. The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind all citizens to be extremely careful when using candles and never leave them unattended for any period of time.
