FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mayor appoints citizens advisory committee to assist with Nonmotorized
Transportation Pilot Program
COLUMBIA, MO (February 13, 2006) -- Mayor Darwin Hindman announced the
appointment of a Citizens Advisory Committee to assist the City Council
in carrying out a Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program. The
original grant was for $25 million which has been reduced to $22 million
over a four-year period.
Columbia is one of four communities designated by the federal
government to receive a grant to participate in a pilot program to
construct a network of nonmotorized transportation infrastructure
facilities, including sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian and
bicycle trails that connect directly with transit stations, schools,
residences, businesses, recreation areas and other community centers.
"Columbia is developing a good network of sidewalks, bike routes and
trails and we will use this to further develop the non-motorized
transportation system," said Hindman. "I am pleased with the unique
mix of citizens who volunteered to serve on this important advisory
committee. They are committed to ensuring that Columbia remains in a
leadership role in development of an even better system of
interconnected pedestrian and bicycle routes to provide healthy and cost
efficient alternatives for traveling within the city."
The purpose of the program is to demonstrate the extent to which
bicycling and walking can carry a significant part of the transportation
load, and represent a major portion of the transportation solution
within selected communities.
