Powering Columbia's Future
a Columbia Water and Light presentation about future electric supply
options
(Columbia, MO) -- Where will the energy come from to power
Columbia in 2008? Dan Dasho, director of Columbia Water and Light, will
present the details of Columbia's future electric supply options on
Wednesday, March 1, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Council
Chambers of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway.
The quest to meet Columbia's future electric needs from 2008
to 2028 was studied by an engineering firm who requested proposals from
suppliers and compared them to local supply options. Four proposals went
through the screening process:
*	Ameren: Purchase 75 megawatts of energy from power plants in
Illinois.
*	LS Power: Power purchase agreement of energy generated from a
plant and/or an ownership alternative for up to 100 megawatts. This
would be energy generated from a plant in northeast Arkansas.
*	Peabody: Power purchase agreement of up to 100 megawatts and/or
an ownership alternative of up to 50 megawatts. The Prairie States
project in southern Illinois would generate this power.
*	Self-Build: Add to the existing power plant on the Business Loop
with cleaner, optional fuel source generating units.
Electric supply proposals are evaluated for reliability, cost,
transmission of the electricity to Columbia and the environmental
impact. Currently the Water and Light Advisory Board and the City
Council are reviewing the options. The Columbia Water and Light
presentation is being held to inform the public of the proposals being
considered at this time. The Columbia City Council is responsible for
making the final decision on how to meet Columbia's future electric
supply needs.
The presentation will be broadcast live on the city's
government access channel, The Columbia Channel, on Mediacom channel 13
and Charter Communications channel 2. Copies of a presentation from the
contracted engineering firm on the power supply options study are
available on the city's Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com or by calling
(573) 874-7325. Questions about the future electric supply options can
be sent to wlmail at GoColumbiaMo.com.
