Reconstruction begins at Cosmo Park and Fairview Park tennis courts

COLUMBIA, MO (July 18, 2006) -- Columbia Parks and Recreation is set to
begin work on two parks projects approved by voters last November. The
tennis courts at Cosmo and Fairview parks will be completely rebuilt
starting this week. 

The courts will be closed during the reconstruction, which is expected
to take several months. The fence surrounding the court at Fairview will
be removed on Thursday (July 20) and the fence surrounding the Cosmo
courts will be removed on Monday (July 24). Signs notifying park users
will be posted at both locations. 

Courts at other Columbia parks, including those at Cosmo-Bethel,
Oakland and Shepard, will be unaffected and will remain open to park
users. 

Four new courts are planned at Fairview Park, replacing the four courts
that are there now. All eight courts will be replaced by eight new
courts at Cosmo Park as well. The new courts are scheduled to be
completed sometime this fall. 

The new tennis courts are two of many parks projects that will be
funded by the extension of an eighth-cent parks sales tax. A portion of
the projects will also be funded by a $100,000 grant from the United
States Tennis Association (USTA).
