Columbia road projects advance with help of Missouri senators Bond and
Talent

COLUMBIA, MO (July 21, 2006) -- Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond and
Senator Jim Talent announced Thursday that they had secured partial
funding for two major road projects in Columbia. The money is part of a
federal spending bill expected to take effect on Oct. 1.

Senator Talent secured $4.5 million for the Gans Road Overpass. Senator
Bond secured $3 million for the Highway 740 (Stadium Boulevard)
extension.

“I sincerely appreciate the efforts of Senator Bond and Senator
Talent,” said Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman. “The proposed Gans Road
Overpass not only provides much-needed transportation expansion for
Columbia. It also will boost the University of Missouri’s Discovery
Ridge project where important economic development and commercialization
of research will benefit Columbia and the entire state.”

“The additional funding for the Highway 740 extension, when
completed, will provide much-needed access on the east side of town to
I-70 and between the north and south parts of Columbia,” Hindman
said.

The Gans Road Overpass, one of Senator Talent’s top priorities for
the area, will create an interchange with Highway 63 at a key area.
Ultimately, it could link Discovery Ridge, a proposed city regional
park, Rock Bridge State Park and the University research reactor on
Providence Road. The project is part of the city’s transportation and
thoroughfares plans.

New funding for the Highway 740 project would add to $2 million secured
last year by Missouri 9th District Congressman Kenny Hulshof. The
extension of Stadium Boulevard, expected to cost at least $44 million
when complete, has been a city priority for several years. It will
finally connect Stadium Boulevard from I-70 on the west to I-70 on the
east, relieve traffic congestion at the Highway 63 interchange and
improve safety.

The funding recommendation must be approved by the full Senate and then
reconciled with the House of Representatives. A final spending bill will
be sent to the president for his signature.
