TreeKeeper volunteers to be recognized Saturday

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Thirty-three TreeKeeper volunteers will be
recognized by the city of Columbia this Saturday, March 11, for
completing a six-week course in tree care and management. Mayor Darwin
Hindman will be on hand to congratulate the volunteers at a 7:15 a.m.
breakfast at the Rock Quarry House in Rock Quarry Park.
The TreeKeepers program is sponsored by the city of Columbia
Parks & Recreation Department- Forestry Division and the Office of
Volunteer Services. After completing course work, volunteers are asked
to volunteer 36 hours on tree projects in city parks and along trails
and streets.
In addition to the class that is completing course work, eight
volunteers from past classes will be honored for completing their 36
hours of service to the city: Robert Chastain, George Cummins, Dennis
Dierker, Janet Dierker, Buddy Hardwick, Larry Kellerman, Vanessa Melton
and Larry Metcalf.
Following the breakfast at Rock Quarry Park Saturday morning,
volunteers will work along Providence Road, south of Green Meadows,
spreading mulch and pruning trees.
Each year, TreeKeeper volunteers give hundreds of hours to city
tree projects. Since the program began in 1998, over 180 volunteers
have participated, giving nearly 7,000 hours of service.
Another TreeKeepers course will be conducted in the winter of
2007. Those interested in participating, or volunteering for the city in
any way, should contact the city of Columbia's Office of Volunteer
Services at 874-7499 or visit the city's Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
