Nutrition and fitness class offered for junior high school students

(COLUMBIA, MO) - A nutrition and fitness class for junior high school students will be offered starting with an introductory session for parents/guardians and students on Monday, April 3, at 3:30 p.m. at the Activity and Recreation Center (ARC), Ash and Clinkscales. This fun, interactive class is sponsored by the Active Living by Design grant project-a collaborative between the PedNet Coalition and the Columbia/Boone County Health Department.
A major goal of the nutrition and fitness class is to reach at-risk youth and help them adopt healthier, more active lifestyles. This free class will focus on nutrition and physical activity and their relationship to health and fitness. The class will meet immediately after school, twice per week for six weeks, at the ARC. Each session will involve an educational and physical activity component and will last from 60-75 minutes.
The reasons for such a class are clear:
*	38 percent of youth are overweight or at risk for overweight,
*	61 percent of 9-13 year olds do not participate in regular after-school physical activities, and
*	80 percent of overweight adolescents become overweight adults and are consequently at increased risk for several chronic diseases.
To refer a student, or for more information, contact Tom LaFontaine at (573) 673-6700 or by email at fithealth at aol.com.
