Wind Energy Agreement Signing Ceremony

November 9, 2006
10 a.m.
701 E. Broadway
Daniel Boone Building
City Council Chambers

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia City Council will vote on an agreement
to bring energy produced from wind power at the Nov. 6 meeting. If
Council approves the memorandum of understanding with Associated
Electric Cooperative Incorporated, Columbia will start receiving wind
power from Northwest Missouri in 2007.
The Associated Electric Cooperative’s wind farm in King City,
Mo., is currently constructing 27 2.1 Megawatt (MW) units. The agreement
with Columbia Water and Light is for 3/27 of the output of the wind
farm. For example, if the wind farm produces 200,000 Megawatt Hours
(Mwhrs) of electric energy on an annual basis, Columbia would receive
22,222 Mwhrs.
The amount of energy Columbia receives each year is dependant on
the output of the wind farm but staff is estimating the first year of
energy will cost approximately $444,000. The renewable Energy Ordinance
approved by voters in November 2004 requires the utility to not spend
more than three percent above the utility’s power supply cost for
renewable energy. Columbia Water and Light has calculated that three
percent above the power supply costs would equate to around $1.5 million
so the wind energy agreement with Associated Electric is cost
effective.
