Afternoon fire damages central Columbia home

COLUMBIA, MO (November 3, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a
report of a house fire at 1013 Rangeline St., across from Field
Elementary School, at 3:37 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. Upon arrival,
firefighters discovered fire and smoke coming from the roof area of the
single story home. 

Columbia firefighters extinguished the fire but not before extensive
smoke and heat damage occurred to the home. Fire spread to the attic and
firefighters battled to make access and extinguish the fire there.
Firefighters worked about 10 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The house was not occupied at the time of the fire. The home is owned
by John Stephenson and is used as a rental home. The contents of the
home with an estimated value of $5-10,000 were destroyed. Damage to the
structure is estimated at $25-30,000. 

The fire occurred as Field Elementary School was releasing for the day
and traffic was snarled for awhile as fire equipment blocked the road. 

Fire investigators determined that the fire began in the bedroom of the
home and was caused by the heating mechanism in the waterbed.
